Evershed (Kenney), Kathleen Marie

Kathleen Marie Evershed (Kenney), 70, of Fairport, NY, passed away at home on February 21, 2023, surrounded by family.

Kathy (Katie) was born to parents Edward J. Kenney and H. Marie Kenney (Shannon), on January 22, 1953, in Canandaigua, NY. She is predeceased by her parents and sister, Maureen A. Kenney.

She grew up on Miles Avenue and spent her entire life in the village of Fairport where she had many wonderful memories with family, friends, and neighbors. Kathy spent many childhood hours with two aunts that lived on the northside of Fairport back when there was a certain rivalry between northsiders and southsiders in Fairport.

Kathy graduated from Fairport High School in 1971 and went on to earn a degree at MCC.

Kathy met Gregory Marvin Evershed in 1973 and they were married in October of 1976 in Fairport, residing in the Fairport home her father, his brothers and sisters had grown up in on High Street.

Kathy worked as an educator for Monroe 1 BOCES for 20 years, retiring in 2016. During her time at BOCES she worked with many children with special needs who she loved as her own and they loved her. After retiring, she loved and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Kathy adored being a “grammy”, and her grandchildren adored her.

Kathy was always one of the first to offer help to anyone in need in any way she could. She will be greatly missed by many whose lives she touched.

She enjoyed Canandaigua Lake, vacations at Covewood Lodge in the Adirondacks, going for walks, and spending time with her beloved family. Kathy enjoyed and took great pride in taking care of her family. She was our anchor and is greatly missed.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Greg, three children Lindsey Anne Pursel (Jeff), Jennifer Erin Evershed, and Gregory E.M. Evershed, as well as three grandchildren Eoghan James Pursel, Charlotte Elizabeth Pursel, and Harper Grace Pursel. She is also survived by her brother, E. Martin Kenney (Patricia), nieces and nephew as well as numerous cousins.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at HCR Home Health for their excellent care of Kathy. In addition, the family would like to thank the compassionate support of the UR Medicine Hospice care team as well as the doctors and nurses of the Wilmot Cancer Center. A special thank you to family friend Margaret “Missy” Hebert for her loving support. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to numerous friends and neighbors.

Kathy’s Calling Hours will be Sunday (Feb. 26) from 5:00-7:00 pm at Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home at 7501 Pittsford-Palmyra Road (Egypt location), in Fairport. Her Funeral Service will be at 9:00 am Monday (Feb. 27) at The Assumption of Our Lady Church in Fairport. The mass will also be livestreamed.

I worked with Kathy at the Fairport Library and she was the loveliest person who absolutely adored her family. After she started working at BOCES, whenever I saw her, she would give me the warmest hello. I am heartbroken for all of her family; she truly made the world a better place.

My deepest condolences to Kathy’s family. I grew up on MIles Avenue one house away from the Kenny’s. I have many happy memories of fun with the MIles Avenue gang. Kathy, Marty, and Maureen were good friends to me and my sisters.

My heartfelt condolences to the Evershed family in their loss. Kathy was a lovely lady who always had a beautiful smile and kind words about others. Kathy’s daughter, Jennifer and my daughter were in the same class and when our daughters attended Religious Education together Kathy willingly watched my daughter until I came home from work. She was always willing to help whenever and however she could. My husband and I often saw Kathy and Greg in the Adirondacks where we both enjoyed the area. Kathy will be missed by all who knew her.

I am saddened of this news, and will never forget beautiful Kathy after about 3 weeks in my classroom, her very first placement at BOCES in the preschool, saying to me, I am really not sure I can do this. Together we sighed and I reassured her that she could and that she had to take the lead of the child she was paired with. I am pretty sure she never looked back after that conversation where she was so transparent with me. Her thoughtfulness and deep felt sense of responsibility was a true sign of grace in a person. She taught me something that day that I have always cherished, and I feel so blessed to be able to share this with her family.

So sorry to learn of Kathy’s passing. I knew her as a kind and happy neighbor, and also from her time at Northside Elementary School, where she demonstrated such love and care for the children with whom she interacted. Kathy also shared stories with me of growing up in Fairport. My sincere condolences to the Evershed family.
