On the afternoon of February 14th, 2023, Duane Cullen of Fairport was pronounced deceased at the age of 50. He is lived on by his two children, Zachary and Veronica as well as his siblings, Richard, James, David (Carol), Mary, Robert (Tracy), Timothy (Kathleen), and Sean (Regina). Duane passed in his own home following a multitude of health complications over the past few years.

Duane could be described as a joyful man who was always up and wanting to go out. He could never sit still for very long and greatly enjoyed adventuring out into nature. The last few years of his life were dedicated to exploring waterfalls, kayaking in new lakes, finding a good spot to fish, and hunting with his brothers. Becoming an amputee never stopped him from doing what he loved and rather than viewing it as a barrier, he viewed it as another means to work harder for himself. Duane adored his family and cherished every moment he spent with them. It filled his heart with love to see those around him smiling and laughing as he always wanted the best for people. He was a father, brother, uncle, and cousin anyone could look up to and turn towards. He was always willing to lend a helping hand or a hug when needed. The fondest memories of him are his years beginning fatherhood- finding new ways to do his daughter’s hair, building Legos with his son, and making sure to take them both to Mendon Ponds on long walks to appreciate the world around them. His love was felt up to the moment he passed on from this life and although not here with his family and friends physically, Duane will continue on in their hearts.

To respect wishes expressed in the past, there will not be a traditional funeral as his memorial. He only wanted to go quietly and remain with the memories he left with his friends and relatives. He would never want anyone suffering on his behalf so there will be no gathering to view him as he is now, he only wished those he left to think of the wholesome interactions he has been a part of. There will be a private ceremony carried out by his two children but others are welcome to say goodbye separately in any way they are comfortable with. A plaque will be placed in Saint Cyril’s cemetery in Alexandria Bay to commemorate Duane next to his parents. Duane joins his mother, father, and sisters, Darlene and Christine, in another life to continue on fishing and finding waterfalls, only this time free of pain and illness.

I’ve finished life’s chores assigned to me,
So put me on a boat headed out to sea.
Please send along my fishing pole
For I’ve been invited to the fishin’ hole.

Where every day is a day to fish,
To fill your heart with every wish.
Don’t worry, or feel sad for me,
I’m fishin’ with the Master of the sea.

We will miss each other for awhile,
But you will come and bring your smile.
That won’t be long you will see,
Till we’re together you and me.

To all of those that think of me,
Be happy as I go out to sea.
If others wonder why I’m missin’
Just tell ’em I’ve gone fishin’

Any contributions may be considered to be sent to the American Diabetes Association or Lollypop Farm in honor of him.

I am sorry for your loss. He was such a fighter. Probably one of the strongest to overcome obstacles I’ve ever seen.
