Englehart, Erwin George “Flash”

Erwin George “Flash” Englehart

Erwin “Flash” Englehart of Fairport, NY passed away July 6, 2023 at the age of 94.

Born in Penfield to the late Myrtle Sandle Englehart and George Forrest Englehart. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Kathleen, his daughters and sons-in-laws; Susan Englehart and Brian Moore, Betsy and John Martin, Jenny Englehart and Eric Finkle, his grandsons; Daniel Martin (Jackie), Eric Martin (Lindsey), Brian Martin, Darrick Teeter, and Nathan Teeter, his great-grandsons; Wesley, Calvin, and Henry Martin, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and his Friday morning breakfast buddies. Erwin was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses; Bruce and Joy Englehart, Jean and Robert E. Smith, his nephews; Neil Englehart and James Smith, and nephew-in-law Gary Jones.

Erwin was a graduate of Webster High School and Syracuse University. He was an Army Veteran serving as a Second Lieutenant with the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Dix. As VP of commercial loans and Branch Manager at Marine Midland (HSBC) Bank, many of his clients became life-long friends.

He loved quietly but deeply, was practical and hardworking. He led by example and taught his family to live with humility, integrity, kindness, and humor.

Never one to sit still, Erwin was an accomplished woodworker and a collector of coins and model trains. His basement train diorama was as impressive as it was large. In his retirement, he reupholstered furniture and painted wood ducks. He enjoyed watching the backyard birds and cursed the abundance of squirrels. From May to November, he enjoyed Saturday morning trips to the public market and a walk along the canal. He was a master gardener (flowers, fruits, and vegetables) and took pride in his reputation as the Sandle Drive vegetable fairy – leaving zucchini, tomatoes, and blueberries on his neighbor’s front steps in the early morning hours. He loved to ski, golf, sail, hike, and explore the country in his camper. Always curious, always learning, always reading.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In memory of Erwin, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or The Alzheimer’s Association. Please spread kindness, enjoy nature, and always save room for dessert.
