Virginia Mae (nee Parker) Walker was born on December 5, 1936, in Emporia, Virginia. She transitioned on January 9, 2025, after a brief illness at the tender age of 88.
Virginia accepted Christ as her savior at an early age. She was educated in the Greensville County School System. Virginia worked as a sharecropper in Emporia along with her parents, Sarah and McKinley Parker as well as her siblings, James Parker, Bendell Parker, Lois Jones, Bernice Holloway, and Claude Parker, who predeceased her. Virginia married Raymond James Mayfield in the 1950’s. This union was blessed with two children; Hattie Ruth and Josephine Mayfield. Virginia later relocated to New York, pursuing opportunities in the domestic worker sector.
In 1964, Virginia met and married Clarence Walker while working in New York. They enjoyed 26 years of marriage, residing in both Queens and Buffalo NY.
Virginia had high expectations for her daughters. She was very involved in both of her children’s education. She attended all the school activities that Hattie and Josephine participated in. Her children loved school because she made their education a priority.
Each year, the children were on the honor roll and received perfect attendance awards every marking period.
Virginia was always family-oriented. There was nothing that she wouldn’t do for her girls.
Virginia decided to become a ‘stay- at-home’ mom, ensuring that her children worked diligently and were always engaged in their academics. Virginia also worked within her community and helped parents with their children by babysitting. In her lifetime, she has also taken care of several children who have become successful in their communities and hold careers in law enforcement, performing arts, and in the criminal justice system. Virginia also helped raise her grandnieces, and great grand nieces Iris Oliver, Shara Oliver, Aisha Oliver, Brenna Wallace and Tonya Rose Lewis and treated them as her own children.
Virginia is survived by two siblings, her sister, Odell Pearson, and her brother, Elbert Parker (Helena) in Virginia. She also is survived by a host of nieces, great- nieces, and great- nephews who reside in Richmond, Virginia, as well as a multitude of cousins who live all over the United States!
Virginia had a heart of gold and a soul to match. Being in her presence with her sense of humor and love for all, she made everyone feel that the world was better for all those she touched.
