Howard was best known for loving his family and friends. He loved being a grandfather and great-grandfather while acting as a father figure to many in the community. He referred to many people as “borrowed” sons and daughters.
Howard was happiest when being of service to people. He would be one of the first people there when help was needed. He was a dedicated tinkerer and fixer upper, well known in Tully Valley and Fairport for being able to fix just about any appliance for little or no cost.
Howard worked as a dairy farmer in Tully, NY for many years. Howard then worked as a truck driver for Tully Agway for 26 years delivering feed and fertilizer to area farms. After retirement he continued milking cattle as needed around the Tully area. Howard also drove snowplow and construction trucks for the Town of Tully.
Howard’s belief in service led him to rise to the position of Fire Lieutenant for Elbridge Fire Department. Later he become Master of Tully Valley Grange and took the position in the Board of Trustees for Cardiff United Methodist Church in Lafayette.
After Howard and Joanne moved to Fairport, NY he continued his generosity by assisting wherever needed at Perinton Presbyterian Church by serving whether running the tractor or helping in the kitchen. He cherished the friendships he developed with the men’s group at Church. Many people in Perinton received a good education on a farm life from Howard. Howard’s service was recognized when he was given the award of Earth Angel by Perinton Presbyterian Church in 2019.
Special thanks to Diane Fitzhugh for her wonderful care of Howard and Joanne the last three years, and to Lifetime Care Hospice for their assistance in helping us attend to Howard’s comfort in his final days.
