Braunschweiger, Christian C. PhD

Pittsford, NY – Age 91, died peacefully on March 20, 2018, from complications of a stroke suffered in January.

Through it all, he never lost his notorious wit and sense of humor!  Chris was born on 10/18/1926 in Wellsville, NY where he was a very proud member of the Class of 1944 and their “Undefeated and Untied” football team his senior year!  After serving in the US Navy for 2 years, he graduated from Alfred University in 1950.  He went on to earn his PhD in Mathematics from the University of WI–Madison.  There, he met and married the love of his life, H Patricia Kearns, who, after 60 years of marriage, predeceased him in 2013.  While adding five children along the way, his academic career took them to Purdue University, University of DE, and ultimately, back to Wisconsin and a full professorship at Marquette University where “Dr. B” taught for over 27 years.  He retired in 1993 and was named Professor Emeritus in 1994.  Chris and Pat were fortunate to have travelled extensively in the US and abroad.  When health issues necessitated their move to The Highlands at Pittsford in 2009, they never lost contact with family and friends from every place they had ever called home; including cousins and friends in Germany where Chris and Pat had lived during two academic sabbaticals taken in 1964 and 1981.

He is survived by “his gang”, Michael(Lori Tanner) of Seneca, SC, Susan(Mark)Hickman of Bend, OR, Kathleen(Jorn Piel) of Carlton, GA, Steven(Mary Jo) of Penfield, NY and Mary Pat(Thomas)Hall of Loudon, TN; grandchildren, Charles, Justin(deceased) and Robert Braunschweiger, Stephen Hickman, Lauren(Christopher)Jenkins, Ashley(Robert)Pierce, Karen(Paul)Rufo, Kelly(Tracy)Meade and Molly Hall; great grandsons, Jackson Jenkins, Wyatt Pierce and William Braunschweiger. Chris is also survived by his sister, Alice(Robert)McEnroe of Wellsville, NY, sister-in-law, Kathleen(Jacob)Martens of Wausau, WI and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dad would have wanted to say good-bye to his friends at the Highlands at Pittsford and to thank the staff at Aaron Manor in Fairport, NY for the compassion and care they gave to him and his family during the last two months of his life. There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to join the family for a graveside service to be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville, NY on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 11:00AM.  In lieu of flowers, we suggest donations to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Marquette University.

I am sorry for your loss. Dr. B. made me understand calculus! That was easier said than done. He was one of the best profs at Marquette.

Please accept my deepest sympathy to his family and friends. We were Navy buddies and room mates in San Francisco 1945-46 and some how reunited through the internet in later years. Enjoyed his e-mails and correspondence of the last few years. He was a good pinochle player in the Navy days.. Thanks so much to Mary Jo for keeping us connected. Rest in peace, Chris.

Another one of the ‘great generation’. We feel privileged to have known Dr. B (and Pat) and know the legacy they leave behind will shine on and on.
    Love,
    Bakers

I am going to miss my twin. He was a year older but told everyone he was better looking. That was never true! Growing old with Pat and Chris was truly a joy.

I have fond memories of undergrad and graduate Math classes with Dr B at Marquette. He was a wonderful teacher. Truly a life well lived! My sympathy to Dr B’s family and friends.
