Pittsford: May 6, 2020. After a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, Joan Werdein Closson Carpenter passed away peacefully on May 6th, with her husband of 64 years holding her hand. Joan is predeceased by her mother Angeline, her father Fredrick, brother Charles and sister in law Camilla. She is survived by her husband Frank Carpenter. Their five children: Barbara (Steven) Dahlberg, Robert (Janet) Carpenter, Douglas (Sue DeCann) Carpenter, Donna Engels, David (Brenda) Carpenter. Joan has 15 grandchildren: Michael (Beth) Carpenter, Courtney (Jim) Davidson, Christie, Ryan, Kylie (Kevin), Hayley and Colin Dahlberg, Benjamin (Annie), Christopher (Emily), Emily (Brody) and Matthew Carpenter. Adam Engels. Scott, Thomas and Andrew Carpenter. Three great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.
Joan was born in Rochester, New York on November 19, 1933. She attended and graduated from Monroe High School where she excelled in soft ball, volley ball, basket ball and cheerleading.
On December 3, 1955, she married Frank P Carpenter, raising their five children in Pittsford, NY. Joan worked in the Pittsford school district in many different capacities for thirteen years before retiring. In retirement, Joan and Frank enjoyed extended trips to Florida, golfing up and down the east coast. She was a Yankee’s fan and loved watching the Little League world series. Joan was an avid knitter and crocheter, and loved word games. She was an amazing speller. Her and Frank also enjoyed camping in the southern tier and the Adirondacks. They also took many short trips to Lewisburg, PA and loved visiting Letchworth State Park. She was an active member of the Pittsford Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, volunteered with the Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance and was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Joan lived at her home in Pittsford until March 30th when she was admitted to Highland Hospital briefly and transferred to Monroe Community Hospital. The family is very grateful for the wonderful care and compassion she received at Monroe Community Hospital. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s association.

To Frank, Barb and Steve and families, we are sending our thoughts and prayers to you all. As your neighbors for over 30 years – we have many fun memories of Joan, always smiling and laughing – enjoying your kids and ours as she watched them grow up, she was so proud of her family and grandchildren. We will fondly remember and miss Joan.
