Paul was a gentle, kind soul who lived for his family. He instilled the importance of family in his children and grandchildren, always showing a sincere interest in their life events and careers. His warmth and guidance made a lasting impact, as he was always there to offer a listening ear and valuable advice. Paul served in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman during the Korean War and was assigned to the USS Vogelgesang (DD-862). He was also stationed at Whidbey Island and Great Lakes naval bases. His 40-year banking career began in the mailroom at Lincoln Rochester Trust and culminated at Chase Lincoln Bank as Vice President of the Commercial Loan Compliance Department. This is also where he and Margaret began their courtship leading to a 70-year marriage.
Paul and Margaret were true soulmates and thoroughly enjoyed being in each other’s company. They had a wonderful life together, full of much joy and love. Their faith played an important part in their lives; they were parishioners at St. John of Rochester Church in Fairport for many decades. Paul volunteered in various roles at the Church including a long-time lector and a member of the Finance Committee and Parish Building Committee. He enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, fishing, reading, history and bird carving. Paul enjoyed the camaraderie of many friends throughout his life.

Mr Derleth loved his children and his love spilled over to their friends. I saw his face light up whenever we met. He loved talking about our mischievous younger days and asked about our families without fail. Thank you for your kindness.
So sorry to all of the Derleth family for your great loss
Thank you Paul. Many times, when mom, dad and I came to your home to visit you, my sister Margaret and my nieces and nephews, you would “pick” the guitar and not just strum it. It was an eye opener for me. Because of you, I pursued the banjo and guitar with the emphasis on finger picking. I have enjoyed 50 years of playing and teaching bluegrass banjo. It has led to many great friendships.
I have and will always be extremely grateful to you for such an experience.
You were not only my brother-in-law, but my musical inspiration.
I will sincerely miss you!
He sure was a great example for his little brother. Thanks to Paul and Marg I have a fantastic family of nieces and nephews.
Margaret and Tim,
So, so sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace!
To The Family,
So very sorry for your tremendous loss. Paul was an amazing person and so beloved by so many. I will always remember how kind and welcoming he was of us who were lucky enough to spend time in his home and share friendships with his wonderful family. My love and heartfelt condolences to all of you.
I was fortunate to have worked with Paul at Chase. He was a fine colleague and a real gentleman.
I am so sorry for your loss. Paul was my boss at Lincoln Rochester. It was my first job after graduating business school. He was such a kind person. He was so proud of his family and loved you all so much. I will keep you all in my prayers. Sincerely Jackie Enright
I worked with Paul for several years in the Credit Dept. We were a small group of workers that looked out for one another. I was fresh out of business school – my first job and was so nervous. He made me feel welcome and part of the group. Our office was in the former McFarlane Building before moving to the Tower. He was such a nice, kind and fair man. He talked about his family often.
TO Paul’s family: I worked with Paul for many years in the Credit and Commerial Loan Dept. at the fomer Lincoln Rochester Trust Dept. We were a small group of mostly men and 3 secretaries. He was such a kind man and easy to work with.. He always talked about his family with love and we felt we knew you all. Thoughts and prayers for you all.

So sorry for your loss. Paul & Mary Margaret were a very special couple. I also known Mary Margaret & I are distant cousins. My Mother was Edna Schur Kress.
I worked with Paul at Chase Lincoln First. He was an all around great guy! He was very helpful to me when I took on the position of Consumer Compliance Officer for the company.
The counsel and assistance he provided to me was invaluable in establishing myself in that roll. He was down to earth, kind and caring, and had a good sense of humor. He was a good friend.
RIP Paul. There is a special place in heaven for you.
I knew Paul as a man with a strong commitment to family: his own nuclear family with Margaret and their children; the extended family with the Ehmanns and the Schurs; and to the family at large with his work on the family tree.
He was always kind and welcoming to me when I was young and visited with him and Margaret and all the kids, and then over the years as we pored over the family tree. I remember too his good sense of humor as we would laugh about some of the ironies of life. His presence was important to me.
Linda, I recognized your dad as soon as I saw his picture. I am sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and your family. I’m not sure if you remember me – my family lived right down the street from your grandparents on Marion Street.
Debbie, You have never been forgotten ! I remember playing between your house and my Grandparents’ house. Can you imagine now letting kids at our age then or even older going back and forth without being supervised ? We had great times as little kids; who lived about 2 doors the other way that we used to play with ? Was it Wanda ? This summer we rented a small bus that my dad’s wheelchair would fit in as he wanted to see the places he and we had lived and where he went to school, work and church etc… Many of us were able to accompany him and we took a lot of pictures and reminisced. He enjoyed it so much.
Thank you for remembering and sharing. Linda Derleth Glathar
God Bless our Aquinas Class of 1949 Brother.
My deepest sympathy to all you Derleth’s. Paul was our first friend at was then Lincoln Rochester. In 1962. We lost touch when we moved to Norwich N.Y, but reconnected with Sue in 1988. She was our first Paycheck Rep at our newly acquired business, Sumner Hayes Office Products in Norwich. Miles kept us apart, but the wonderful memories and initial support remain. God bless all of you, obviously a very strong family unit. Your Mom and Dad smiling down on you. May they REST IN PEACE.
