Dugan, James Vincent

James Vincent Dugan

(1933-2024)

James Vincent Dugan, 91, of Penfield, a business owner, landowner, mover, farmer, school bus driver, husband, father, and grandfather, died November 27th after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Jim is preceded in death by parents Thomas Dugan and Rose Dugan, and by his siblings, John Dugan, Mary Kavanagh, Sister Theresa DePaul, and Anna Lowe. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Cathy Dugan; children Patrick Dugan, Katie Dugan Barber (Al Allen); two grandchildren, Annie Barber and Henry Barber; and so many loving family and friends.

Born a child of the Depression, Jim learned to work hard and appreciate what he was given and what he earned. This dedication guided him throughout his life at work, in the fields, and in his home. He loved to be surrounded by loved ones, farm his land, ski, sail, and be on the water.

Many who knew Jim described him as a soft-spoken, humble man, with a strong presence. He wholeheartedly enjoyed family and friends and time with his grandchildren. He was always thinking, always trying to devise new ways to find some sort of good investment or deal.

Jim proudly answered the call to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean war, stationed in Georgia. He earned two degrees from the University of Dayton; one in Electrical Engineering and one in Business Administration. He married Catherine Ritzel on September 5, 1964. He co-owned Dugan Brothers Trucking, a refuse container business; worked as a mover and supervisor for Allied Van Lines; and invested in land and property, all the while farming over 100 acres of land. He enjoyed being outdoors with the cows, sheep, pigs, horses, geese, goats, and chickens, and enjoyed the farm life, raking and baling hay with Patrick and Katie. Siblings, cousins, and friends have fond memories of the whole farm experience, the huge country fairs, swinging from the 30-foot rope hanging from the rafters in the barn, and the fun-filled hayrides that were always such an integral part of the event.

Their first move after his retirement was to buy a hurricane-damaged home off the Albemarle Sound in Hertford, North Carolina to occupy their time in refurbishing it to its natural beauty.

Jim will be remembered for his dry, quick-witted humor, his joy for farming, and most of all his love for family and friends. Jim and Cathy’s farm home was an open, revolving door for all who wished to stop by.

Jim and Cathy loved collecting and refurnishing antiques and had great pride in the collection that they accumulated throughout their years together. Jim loved everything about the outdoors and farming. His family spent many summers on Sodus Bay, and he loved taking them out on his sailboat and swimming with the family dog.

He was an active member at St. Joseph Church. He and Cathy had a strong faith that was important to them and made many contributions to various Catholic organizations.

In lieu of flowers, please share your memories of Jim as we continue to remember a great man.

Services will be held Friday, December 13th, 11:00am at Saint Joseph Church 43 Gebhardt Rd, Penfield, NY 14526, with a reception on-site to follow.

I’m going to miss you Jim. I loved your smile everyday I walked into your room at Penfield Place. I’ll never forget our long conversations on the patio and in your room of your past. Your stories of your life as a kid, your old cars, your many occupations, your interests in antiques, and your many stories of your siblings. We bonded as two old men rehashing our good times growing old. I miss you Jim. Thanks for being my friend. Al Allen

We miss you already Uncle Jim. You were always very special to all of us, & a very important part of our lives.
Although you were mostly a quiet man, you had that great “Dugan” sense of humor. We will never forget the time you called our Mom & asked her if she could watch “Billy” for you. We all thought you were going to bring over a little boy, but instead you brought over a goat, hahaha!
Thank you for all the great times we shared, & for all the wonderful memories that we will continue to cherish. Also, thank you for always being there for us.
We love you very much, Diane & Vince; Joni; Johnny; Brett & Virginia; Brooke, Brent, Bryce, & Brielle

    1. You all meant just as much to him. What a nut he was. Love that story. Love you all.

Our heartfelt condolences to Aunt Cathy, Patrick and Katie on your loss. Uncle Jim was a wonderful man whom I got to know through stories from my dad. Dad would share the times he would work on the trash trucks with his uncles and what they taught him in life. Jim was my dad’s best friend, his best man, and “older brother.” They were less than 10 years apart and I imagine they were two peas in a pod. I always enjoyed spending time with him and Aunt Cathy when I had the chance. I came across an article recently about a man who collected pictures of walk off home runs – not the hit itself, but rather the teammates waiting at home plate as the runner passed third base. When asked why he collected these pictures, he said that they represent what he imagines what heaven is like as you are rounding third. So there he is … rounding third with all the Dugans (and Kavanaghs) rooting him on. God’s Speed Uncle Jim. Love, Kerri

    1. That is beautiful, Kerri. Thank you! Love that idea about rounding third. Almost there. ❤️

Mr. Dugan was always kind and generous. As the dad of one of my closest friends, he was a familiar face throughout my teenage years and beyond. Things I will always remember about him:
He was very resourceful, which sometimes manifested in some questionable car choices for Katie. Somehow we survived them all.

Mr. Dugan lit up when he talked about something or someone he loved. I witnessed this most frequently when he spoke about his land, nature, or his family.

Quiet and unassuming, he often had a bit of mischief in his eyes. I think this was the gift of the Irish. It was pure delight in seeing the surprise of things—in being aware of more than he let on. He could find humor in the ridiculous and simple parts of life.

To the Dugan family—thank you for sharing him with all of us. He was truly a great man. Know he made a difference in this world.

    1. Thanks Jeanette! Questionable car choices for sure! Ha! And he certainly did have a twinkle in his eyes when he smiled. And that dry sense of humor!

  10. I have to say it was a great honor to have met and known Jim. We worked together at the bus garage and he was always one of my favorite people. I will always remember one time when he picked up a piece of trash on the side of the road and stuffed it into his car. When I asked him what he was going to do with it, he said he would figure something out. That was Jim! So sorry to hear of his passing. He was truly a wonderful man and certainly one of a kind.

    1. David,

Thank you for your comments. It is always heartwarming to hear he had an impact on people I never met. He was quite a character; I’m glad he found a kindred soul. Thank you for your nice words.

Goodbye old friend. You were great neighbor and friend. You and Cathy keep am interesting property with the antiques and interesting out buildings and we both enjoyed clever uses of “materials of opportunity”. We went to the meetings of the Penfield Town and County Committee until we became disappointed in how it was run.
You and Cathy were great parents and your children were hard workers the different times they worked for me. I will never forgot the time I had hay down and my bailer broke with bad weather approaching. In desperation I headed to you and asked if I could borrow your bailer. I was amazed when you said “NO”. You stated there was not enough time before dark to get the hay in. Instead you sent bailer, your tractor, and Patrick! That way I could use my tractor to pick up the hay with my trailer as Patrick baled the hay. Or when you got your old utility truck fired up and running to drill and place power poles so I could run power to the new horse barn that Patrick helped build, etc. We both struggled with design problems with our Vermont Casting Wood Stoves and you gave me your simple but clever solution to the extremely hot handles the stove had. I still use your solution on my stove! The Country lost something when it ended the draft; we were different people after serving; it taught us to bond with strangers, to help each other, to solve problems together, to treat problems with humor, etc.St. Peter is certainly going to let you in; I hope to qualify and join you when my turn comes.

So Barb & I live “across the road and down a piece” Mr. Dugan was in my opinion the “Gate Keeper of Harris Rd ” It is not often that you find a neighbor that gets involved whenever there is trouble. No mater what the trouble was in the neighborhood, Mr. Dugan and family were always a welcome help. I never had the opportunity to chat long, However the few times we met you could tell he was a blessing for all. My prayer is that more people will follow the example he and his family set! Simply a great neighbor and in these times that’s five gold stars… God bless
