Amy Gerace’s Life

Amy Louise (Amy Lou) Gerace was born in Rochester, NY on August 3, 1934, to Lillian and Anthony Gerace. She and her beloved siblings Barden and Sally grew up in West Irondequoit, where she attended high school. She started work as bank teller at Rochester Savings Bank (now Citizen’s Bank), and as an Administrator in Real Estate and Advertising before returning to the bank where was promoted to Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Marketing (her favorite job).

She was married to Roy Rizzo Jr. for 30 years and had two daughters, Noreen and Marie. They lived in the city of Rochester until 1970 when they moved into her parents’ home in Irondequoit when they relocated to Perinton. She laughed often that she had three grandchildren in one year, Joshua who was born in April and Caitlin and Kelly-twins born in November.

She and her sister Sally subsequently moved into the house in Perinton and they enjoyed living together for a number of years. The house is now owned by her niece and husband. The neighbors have known five generations of the Gerace family.

She remarked how happy she was to have lived long enough to enjoy having two great-grandchildren, Jack and Barden.

Amy was unusually resilient making an astounding recovery from Guillian-Barre’ Syndrome in 2010, Even as she faced subsequent injuries and illnesses she persevered. Everyone in her family looked at her for inspiration.

Amy was a self-professed “home-body” who loved taking care of her yard and enjoying her three-season porch. She loved her Sudoku and doing crossword puzzles with her sister. Some members of the family have one of her knitted sweaters which she made for herself as well. Before switching to assisted living she could be found in the kitchen cooking up one of her famous recipes-including some much-loved Italian dishes.

In the past few years Amy was taken care of by the staff from Elderwood at Fairport and Fairport Baptist Homes where she made new friends and enjoyed doing puzzles.

  1. Very sorry to see this. The Gerace family was always fun to visit. I will tell my father Bruce Conroe and uncle Barden Conroe, who are probably unaware. Their mother was Amy’s aunt Frances.

  2. Sending condolences to our cousins on the Barden-Gerace side of the family. Amy (&Sally) were/are much loved by her 1st cousins my Dad Barden A.Conroe(97) , my aunt Connie M Conroe (d2004) and Uncle Bruce Conroe(94). Amy was always so stylish and cheerful and shall remain so in our hearts.
