Virginia (Ginny) Gibson (nee Lewis), age 79, of Pittsford passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 11th, 2024. Ginny was born in Scranton Pennsylvania and grew up in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. She graduated with honors from Binghamton University with a bachelor’s degree in applied social science. Afterward, however, she turned to sculpture and painting. She went on to earn an MFA from RIT. Working primarily in gauche and oil, she focused on architectural interiors, cityscapes, and landscapes. She loved art, museums, people, and she deeply loved her family: her two brothers, their children and grandchildren.
She and her husband George were married in 1986 and moved to Fairport, New York in 1993. Early in hers and George’s relationship, while walking home from dinner one night, she turned to him and said, matter-of-factly, “I’m afraid this might work out.” After 39 years together, it appears that things did indeed work out. Ginny loved being in nature and one of her favorite places in Rochester was the Burroughs Audubon Nature Club. She painted there and hiked its trails with George in every season. She was a woman of strong resilience balanced by delicacy and humor. She had a gift of intuition; able to see connections and share her insight with others.
Ginny was preceded in death by her parents Edna Louise Lewis (nee Evans) and William Watson Somerville Lewis and by her brother Walter Lewis. She is survived by her husband George Gibson, her brother Richard Lewis, her nieces Amy Branch, Elizabeth Pratson, Wendy Carnegie, and Elizabeth Hamp as well as nephews Richard, Stephen, Evan, Peter, and Walter Lewis.
A celebration of her life will be held in the spring in one of her favorite wild places.

Ginny was the dearest, sweetest, most talented individual. We cherish all of the memories of times we spent with Ginny and George. She had many health challenges through the years which she met with her incredible strength. She was a wonderful role model for how to keep moving forward when there are obstacles in your way. I’m comforted to have some of her artwork in my family. She is with us in spirit. She will be deeply missed.
