Thomas Michael Green, lovingly known as Tom, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on  Thursday, January 8, 2026, just two days after celebrating his 86th birthday.

Born on January 6, 1940, Tom lived a life rooted in hard work, kindness, and deep devotion to family. He  was predeceased by his beloved wife Barbara, his brother Steve, and his parents. Though his heart was  forever shaped by those losses, Tom continued to give love freely and generously to everyone around  him.

Tom is survived by his daughter Traci (Pete) and son Tommy (Sara); his cherished grandchildren Craig  (Channi), Ellie (Kevin), Koby, Shea (Kimmie); his four adored great-grandchildren Rowan, Maverick,  Ryan, and Westin; and many special relatives and friends. Family was everything to Tom, and he  treasured every moment spent together—whether it was a simple visit, a shared laugh, or just being in the  same room.

Tom began his career as a banker at Security Trust, but his true dream was to own his own business. In  1972, he proudly purchased Mayer Hardware, beginning a remarkable journey that would span more than  four decades. His wife Barb left her nursing career to join him as the bookkeeper, and together they  worked side by side for 45 years, building not just a successful business, but a community hub filled with  warmth and connection.

One of Tom’s greatest joys was sitting at the paint counter, chatting with every customer who walked  through the door. Before long, he knew their stories, their families, and their lives. Customers became  friends, employees became family, and Mayer Hardware became a place where people felt welcome and  known. Tom grew the business beyond anything he ever imagined, always grateful to work alongside  family and employees he deeply valued.

Tom’s leadership extended beyond his store. He was actively involved in trade associations, serving as  President of the New York State Retail Hardware Association, later becoming President of the National  Retail Hardware Association, as well as serving on the Benjamin Moore Retail Advisory Board and the  Servistar Board of Directors—roles he accepted with pride and humility.

Tom also proudly served his country as a Chief Warrant Officer (W3) in the Army Reserves and was a  member of the Masonic Lodge and the Damascus Shrine, commitments that reflected his lifelong  dedication to service.

In his later years, Tom was blessed with incredible caregivers who made it possible for him to remain at  home, where he was happiest, especially with his sweet dog, Rosie, always by his side.

Tom was truly a friend to all. His warmth, humor, work ethic, and generous spirit will live on through the  countless lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.

Calling Hours Monday January 19, 2026 4-6PM at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home (Egypt Location) 7501 Pittsford Palmyra Road, Fairport. Private family burial in spring.

  1. Well… what can I say about this guy! A gentle man who discovered how rewarding and successful a Business Opportunity, when presented, offered guidance and employment for many, many people. Tom was a businessman who truly appreciated his devoted Staff and very loyal Customers, as well. A truly Genuine guy, who presented himself professionally and unassuming. I think of him as a True Friend that transcended our business relationship,

  3. Tom was a 50+ year Member of Fairport-Flower City Lodge, The Damascus Shrine, and the Valley of Rochester.

I had the pleasure of delivering Tom’s 50 year Masonic apron to him and he always reached out with an offer of help when he knew I had a project going on at the lodge.

He asked his aide to let him stay next to me at the wedding mass. We had a nice chat. I am Sara’s aunt. Mr. Green will be missed by so many. My family and I were always welcomed by him.

  14. I was devastated at hearing the loss of senior. I have known him for over 20 years and have always felt like family when interacting with him. He always had a joke and a great sense of humor which is especially hard in the world today. He has left a legacy in Mayer hardware that the community has known to love and remains loyal to. He is sadly missed, but will never be forgotten. 😇

  15. Tom was a great person. We had known him since the early 80’s. We started renovating houses. We would need something we would always go to Mayer Hardware. He always gave great advice on what to do, what you need, and they always had it. He was a very caring person and genuinely interested in you. Tom will be greatly missed by those that knew him. We pray for strength for his family during this sad time.
