JoAnne Marie Hallinan (maiden Van Malderghem) of Pittsford, NY, age 77, sadly passed into eternal life on May 8th, 2024. She is survived by her brother, Robert (Ann) Van Malderghem, her children: Renée (Andrew) Reagan of Pittsford, NY, Edward (Tammy) Hallinan of Cincinnati, OH, and Todd (Michelle) Hallinan of Glastonbury, CT, her grandchildren: Caleigh, Declan, Maclaine and Casey Reagan and Ryan, Dylan, Logan, Lily and Joshua Hallinan, several nieces, nephews, cousins and very close friends.
JoAnne was born December 7th, 1946 in Syracuse, NY, to the late Gaston and Filomena (Fannie DelBalso) Van Malderghem. She was a member of the first graduating class of Henninger High School in 1964, earning a full scholarship to St. Joseph’s Nursing School in 1965.
JoAnne worked as a Registered Nurse for most of her career. The field of nursing was a vocation for JoAnne, aligning to her nurturing and compassionate nature. JoAnne worked in hospitals, nursing homes, and private duty nursing through the years, all while raising three kids as a single parent. Her career eventually led her to her favorite job, working at Wegman’s, where she served as district nurse in their Workers Comp division. Following her retirement from Wegmans, she continued to work part-time for Excellus up until the time of her death.
One of JoAnne’s greatest sources of pride was having all her children earn college degrees. She believed that an education was something that no one could ever take away and she often worked two jobs to afford her children that privilege. JoAnne absolutely loved being a grandmother, always known as Gomma, and consistently extended her love and kindness to her nine grandchildren. She was a talented seamstress. Her talents began as a young mother sewing clothes for her children. Years later, she discovered a passion for quilting and embroidery. Over the past several years she enjoyed spending time with her close sewing circle friends at local sewing shops and travelled on many quilting retreats. Anyone that knew JoAnne also knew she loved dogs. She would never walk by a dog without asking the owner their pet’s name. She leaves behind her beloved Ivy Grace, one of several Golden Retrievers she raised and loved over the years. JoAnne lived a life of loving others, cherishing her family and friends and giving freely of her talents. Please do the same in her memory. Family and friends are welcome to honor and celebrate the life of Joanne Hallinan on Tuesday, May 21 at Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home from 4-6pm located at 7501 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, Fairport. JoAnne’s Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd, 10 am at the Church of the Transfiguration, 50 West Bloomfield Road, Pittsford. If planning on attending either service, please join us in celebrating her by wearing something purple. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Road, Fairport, NY 14450.

Joanne was my closest friend. She traveled to Syracuse often for sewing and lunch with friends. I talked on the phone with Joanne just about every night and miss her terribly. My heart breaks for her family as she was so very proud of her children and all her grandchildren. My life is better having known Joanne the past 20+ years. Rest in peace my dear friend.
Renee, Teddy and Todd. I was so saddened to read of your mom’s passing. She was a wonderful mother with a great laugh that would make the darkest days bright! May she rest in peace.
My heart is sadden by our loss. She shared her great family with me. I will miss our telephone calls and conversations about anything and everything. As part of the three Gomma’s all Old school Registered Nurses and proud parents and grandparents. The memories of our trip to Ireland and Scotland. Nantucket our special place to spend time with our families. Our love of dogs. I will miss you everyday. Rest in peace until I join you. God bless. Eileen Farlow
I met Joanne through our mutual love of sewing. She was one of the kindest people you will ever meet. She was a special help and comfort to me when I met with some scary health situations. She never failed to check in with me and to give me reassurance and confidence. Our adventures and shenanigans at sewing retreat will remain as fond memories of this special friend. I will miss her, but I am so thankful to have known her. God grant her eternal peace.
We are so sad to hear of Joanne’s passing. She and Ivy befriended us while we were out walking Sadie, our golden retriever puppy. She was always so gracious and caring to my entire family. She watched Sadie while we were in the hospital having our first son and also made our twin boys baby blankets when they were born. We always looked forward to our conversations when we saw her and Ivy walking up the road. We will miss seeing her. May she rest in peace <3.
She was simply the best. Her kindness, sincerity, humor and thoughtfulness are legendary. She listened with her heart. We are all better people because of her.♡
I knew Joanne for many years because she brought her dogs to my doggie daycare Canines Unleashed. She was not one to drop the dog and go. She would always inquire about me , my staff, and our dogs. I always enjoyed talking with her. She was always so nice not only to me but to my staff and customers alike. If there was a new nervous parent in the lobby she would tell them all about her dog and how this place would be the best thing to happen to their dog. She never stopped singing our praises. After she retired she still came back to Syracuse and she still brought Ivy to daycare on those trips back. I’ve never known her to not have a smile on her face and her bright light will be sorely missed.
It was a pleasure working with and knowing Joanne. We were both HEDIS nurses and quilters. She will certainly be missed
It was a pleasure knowing and working with Joanne doing HEDIS along with our mutual love of seeing and quilting. She will be missed
Ren – Thinking of you and your family. Your mom seemed simply wonderful and will truly be missed by everyone whose lives she touched. ❤️
JoAnne and I met when we were working for Excellus where we shared the trials and tribulations of obtaining data from medical offices. Three of us carpooled downtown from 12 Corners. I always did the driving and wouldn’t accept gas money so instead she would greet me in the morning with my favorite “everything” bagel. We had some good times going out after work and hashing out the day’s challenges and accomplishments. JoAnne was funny and fun. She was a good listener. Her family was her pride and joy (especially her grandchildren). AND she loved that dog! She was talented, patient, kind, and full of life. She was easy to be friends with. My heart goes out to her family. She will be fondly remembered.
JoAnne will always be remembered in my heart as someone who defined ‘friend’ and ‘family’. Her caring for those around her came thru in quiet ways .
Please accept the most heartfelt sympathies of Le Moyne College. We hope the love and memories that you will forever hold in your heart bring you peace and comfort at this difficult time.
Our thoughts are with JoAnne’s family and friends at this sad t ime/
