Gregory Helbig
It’s with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our brother, Gregory Helbig of Branchport, NY (formerly of Fairport, NY), on September 28, 2025 at the age of 69 while running in the Mugello Marathon in Borgo San Lorenzo, Italy.
Greg was born January 20,1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At an early age, the family moved from Pennsylvania to Fairport NY. He graduated from Fairport High School and went on to complete his Undergraduate degree at Rochester Institute of Technology and Masters of Business and Masters in Environmental Economics degrees at West Virginia University.
He is survived by his daughter Claire Helbig, siblings Erich (Rick) (Sharon) Helbig, and Nina Helbig Perin, nieces and nephews Erich (Kayla) Helbig, and Renee (Jeff) Woodcock, great-niece and nephew Madison McLaughlin and Jaxon Woodcock and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. In addition, he was beloved by many long-time friends. He was predeceased recently by parents Erich H. Helbig and Concetta B. (Connie) Helbig and in 2018 by his love and soulmate Irene Schoeller.
Greg was an avid outdoorsman. He loved running and planting gardens. He participated in well over 100 marathons around the world. He was also an avid reader of all forms of books, news, a wide array of periodicals, and educational material. Greg loved to travel in the US and abroad and would usually include at least one marathon in every trip he took. He was a long-time WVU football supporter and he also loved soccer and would try to catch all the FIFA World Cup games. Greg was also a very long-time Rolling Stones fan.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Fairport VFW Post 8495, 300 Macedon Center Rd, Fairport, NY on Sunday, November 30, 2025 at 1p.m. Anyone wishing to share a ‘Greg Story’ will be welcome to do so. A light snack will be served. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association.

Biggs, the world is a far less interesting place with you at the next level. You’ll be sorely missed by all who know you.
My condolences to all who knew him. You live on in our memories.
I used to call him C.C. Biggs, or just C.C. For short! I have home a ride home from our 5 year reunion! 1978. My sincerest condolences Rick and Nina. Final goodnight C.C.
Keebler Chocolate Chip cookies! Signed, Little Goog!
Greg, You are forever in my heart. Mike
I knew Greg in high-school. We both ran track. He was a bit older than me, and I admired his talent and the way he treated people (with respect and good humour). I chose to focus on the half mile because that was Greg’s event. I was delighted to find Greg on Facebook a few months ago. I am very sad that he’s gone. He was a light.
Biggs, rest in peace old friend. Many good times as neighbors in Fairport.
Biggs! You will be missed…keep them running in Heaven!
Still can’t believe you’re gone. We had plans to get together after your Italy trip. Run and never get tired. Grow all your plants in heaven.
Biggs, your friendship was a highlight of my high school years in Fairport. I’m so glad we reconnected in the last couple of years. I miss you.
