Arthur Charles Hildebrandt, a lifelong educator and devoted family man, passed away on June 6, 2026, at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was 78 years old.
Born on September 27, 1947, in Queens, New York, Arthur grew up in Williston Park, NY, where he graduated from Herricks High School. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Central College and his Master’s degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College. He would go on to spend his career shaping young minds, and earning more than a few groans from students and faculty with his sense of humor along the way.
Arthur began his career in education as a Music teacher at Tuckahoe High School. He later moved into school administration, serving as Principal and Vice Principal at Main Street Middle School and Montpelier High School in Montpelier, Vermont, and at Wheatland-Chili, Manchester-Shortsville, and Cato-Meridian in the Rochester, New York area. To the students and staff who knew him, he was the kind of leader who understood that a well-run school, like a well-played symphony, depends on everyone finding their part.
A devoted lover of classic cinema and music, Arthur could be counted on for a well-timed reference to an old film or an even better-timed pun. Those who knew him will remember that his sense of humor was sharp, reliable, and often eye-roll-inducing. His love of classical music and opera was a constant throughout his life, and for many years he shared that gift with his community as a tenor in the choir at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Arthur was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Mary Hildebrandt; his sister, Karen Alvarez; and his parents, Arthur Thomas and Ann Hildebrandt.
He is survived by his sons, Scott and Michael Hildebrandt; his grandson, Mackay Hildebrandt; his daughter-in-law, Jen Lunsford; his brother, Thomas Hildebrandt; his sister-in-law, Janet Hildebrandt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A friend from high school days…he and his brother were great classmates and a pleasure to know.
He was a high school teacher of mine back in the early 70s. I remember his sense of humor and quick wit. I enjoyed being in his class.
Art and Margie were our great friends for many years as our young children grew into their teens. Art’s quick wit and amazing mind always left me in awe. I’m sorry to hear that he’s no longer with us, but I’m sure he’s now in a better place with Margie once again on his side. Unfortunately we won’t be able to attend his services, but send our deepest condolences to his two wonderful sons and other family members.
Arthur was best man at my wedding. He was also my Assistant Principal when I served as Principal at Tuckahoe High School. We car pooled together when we were both living in Ossining, N.Y. My trusted friend, he had a beautiful voice and was an equally beautiful man.
Oh, Arthur, you left us too soon. I have often thought of you and Tom. ( I married a Tom ) I know you had a great fulfilling life. You will rest in peace, my friend.
Art and I were great friends and classmates at Central College. We shared so many laughs and good times as geeky music majors. He introduced me to his favorite singers, his most beloved musical works, and zest for life. My wife, Janie, and I enjoy a memorable lunch with Art and his wife a few years ago. We had not remained close over the years but were able to reconnect recently. I was thrilled to communicate with him again but know he suffered from health issues later in life, a fact that saddened me immensely… Rest in peace, dear friend, and sincere condolences to his family and friends.
As one of his THS students, I remember his laughter, his joy in music, and his generous support of our musical goals. My condolences to his family and friends.
Art was my favorite teacher back in the early 70s at Tuckahoe. I remember going to see him sing in THE MAGI with a few other classmates. What a wonderful voice. He will be missed.
