Karen Anne Hirsch was a mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister who succumbed to lung cancer on July 8, 2023. She died with her children by her side.

Karen was born to June and William Hirsch Sr. on August 23, 1953. After graduating Pittsford Sutherland High School in 1971 Karen married and then divorced Peter R. Garney, with whom she had two children, Kellee deOlde and P. Sean Garney. Karen was predeceased by her father, William Hirsch, and is survived by her mother, June Hirsch. She had three siblings Susan (Michael) Henry, Diane O’Brien, and Bill Hirsch. She is also survived by three grandchildren Katarina, Eloise and William.

Karen is remembered for her infectious and recognizable laugh and as someone who lived in the moment. She enjoyed playing cards and having drinks with friends. She was quick to throw caution to the wind if adventure awaited, an attribute many appreciated. When her children were in high school, she attended Bryant and Stratton, attaining an Associate’s Degree in Accounting, an accomplishment that made her and her family proud. Over the years, Karen worked in numerous careers including accountant, waitress and deli clerk.

Karen enjoyed watching true crime tv, pixar movies, and spending time with her cat, Missy. She was a voracious reader. Her children remember growing up listening to music, watching tv, and playing games with their mother. Karen adored her parents and could never move too far away from them. Karen was a loving mother, but struggled with mental health and addiction, straining  some relationships. Though she had trouble always demonstrating it, she was a loving person who will be remembered fondly.

Calling Hours Saturday August 5, 2023 10AM-12PM at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home (Egypt Location) 7501 Pittsford Palmyra Road, Fairport where a funeral Service will follow.

I am so sorry to hear that Karen, “Sunshine” has passed. I know the last months of her life were very difficult because of all the treatments for Cancer. She can rest in peace now. We have had a lot of laughs and good memories over the years and I will always remember her fondly. My prayers go out to her whole family but especially her sister Diane who was with her every step of the way.

I did not have a lot of time with Karen, she was my husband’s niece. The time we did have together was fun , loving, and special. Karen was a lovely woman,
Judging anyone is a shame, and useless
Rejoice and remember all the love she shared with all of us.
