Nancy Evelyn Hulse, age 82, of Rochester NY, passed away peacefully on November 11th, 2024. Born in Rochester NY on November 15, 1941, to Evelyn and Ernest Baxter, she was the youngest of three daughters.

She spent one year at Oberlin College but then transferred to Syracuse University where she graduated with a teaching degree.  After college she went into the Peace Corp where she met her husband, Derek, while in training to serve in the Philippines.  When she returned to the US, she worked as an elementary special education teacher for over 30 years.

Nancy and Derek loved to travel and had amazing adventures traveling all over the globe.  They instilled this love of travel to their children who were blessed to have been taken camping all across the United States while growing up.   In addition to travel, she volunteered with numerous local organizations over the years, was active in her garden and book clubs.

She was preceded in death by Derek William Hulse, her loving husband and best friend; her sisters, Joan Baxter and Barbara VanBuren; and grand-daughter Nichole Hulse. She is survived by her adored children, daughters Susan Hulse and Deborah Slais (Brian); son Jeffrey Hulse (Melanie); her nephew Jim Baxter, and her beloved grandchildren Samantha and Tyler Slais and Lyla and Mila Hulse.

She was cherished by family and friends and will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, friendship, kindness, resilience, and the joy they brought to the lives of those around her.   She will be dearly missed.

A celebration of life reception will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, 220 S Winton Rd, Rochester, NY 14610 on Sunday the 15th from 2-4pm.   In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations be made to the outreach center at Asbury Methodist Church where Nancy volunteered for a number of years.  https://asburyfirst.org/give-outreach/ .

I had the absolute pleasure of working closely with Nancy in the Fairport School District from 1985 until she retired. The dedication, care and generosity that she brought to her teaching career made her one of my all-time favorite colleagues. I was so fortunate to have her in my life for 39 years and will miss her very much. My condolences go out to Nancy’s family and to her many friends.
