Kester, Robert W. (K2JJT)
March 19, 2026
Robert W. Kester (K2JJT), of Fairport, NY, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at the age of 96, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on February 15, 1930, in Rochester, NY, to Earl and Lois Kester. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War as a Unit Administrator with the R & M Company,321st Signal BN, where he worked in radio communications, provided entertainment by running movies for fellow soldiers, and helped keep his unit organized.
Upon returning home, Bob married his beloved wife, Eva M. Miller, and began his career at Gleason Works as a journeyman tool and die maker. Dedicated to lifelong learning, he attended night school and earned his Associate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Bob was a devoted member of the Egypt Volunteer Fire Department, where he enjoyed serving his community, participating in department activities, and marching in parades. Family camping became a cherished tradition beginning in 1965 at Sugar Creek Glen Campground in Dansville, NY. It is a legacy that continues today with generations of his family returning to the same site.
A man of many interests and talents, Bob was a passionate amateur radio operator, known by his call sign K2JJT, and an active member of the Rochester Amateur Radio Association. Well into his 90s, he continued to connect with others around the world, participate in contests, and attend local Hamfests. He also had a deep love for photography, capturing family memories and even creating handmade Christmas cards.
Bob was truly a “Mr. Fix-it,” always tinkering with and restoring electronics from televisions and radios to computers. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures as well, including caring for his cats, birdwatching, genealogy, and gardening.
Over the years, Bob received numerous recognitions, including awards from the Egypt Fire Department and the Rochester Amateur Radio Association. He was also known for his distinctive VanDyke gouche mustache, earning honors in the Perinton Sesquicentennial Mustache Contest in 1962 and again during the 2012 Bicentennial celebration. A lifelong member of Perinton Presbyterian Church, he served faithfully on the building committee for the current church.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Lois; his beloved wife, Eva; and his sister, Wilma K. Gandy. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Kester-Andres and Kendall Wagenhals; his grandsons, Louis (Beth) Andres, Benjamin Wagenhals, and Andrew Wagenhals; his great-grandchildren, Louis Jr., Quinn, Noah, and Amelia Andres; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to Perinton Presbyterian Church or Lollypop Farm in Victor, NY.
Calling Hours Tuesday March 24, 2026 5-6PM at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home (Egypt Location) 7501 Pittsford Palmyra Road, Fairport, where a Funeral Service will immediately follow.

Our sympathy to Barbara and Kendall and their families. They are in our prayers. We met them when we joined the Egypt Fire Dept. In the early 60’s. Bob and Eva were always the first to help with all the dinners , marching in parade, carnivals. They raised a great family.
Dear Kendall, Ben, Andrew, and family,
We are saddened to learn of the loss of your Dad and Grandpa. May the prayers of so many who knew him, provide peace and comfort for you all in the days ahead.
Love,
Nancy and Ed
