Fairport, New York Jean H. Lauder December 2 2023
After a well-lived long life, at age 100 – loved and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, neighbor, and friend.
Born October 8, 1923 in Portsmouth, VA to Ethel and Paul Hurdle.
Survived by her daughters, Nancy Lauder Brown, Sue E. Lauder (Sue Chapman), Betsy Lauder Reeder; grandchildren, Kate Brown Tally (Joe), Andrew Brown (Jena), Elizabeth (Dan Cherkis) and Sarah Reeder; great-grandchildren, Addison Tally, Olivia, Logan, and Samuel Brown, and Jackson Cherkis.
Dedicated to her family and the Fairport community, she practiced the Ministry of the Greeting card. Through 3 printers in the last year, she continued to make and send birthday, get well, sympathy, holiday, and congratulations cards, poring over the messages to find the perfect message for her recipient. Not seeking a response, she was always pleased when someone told her how much the card meant to them – but praise was not the objective…her objective was to acknowledge the individual. I worked several years for Jack, Jean’s husband.
Jean was such a sweet woman. She worked beside me occasionally.
I still have several recipes that she had written down for me.
Condolences to Nancy, Betsy and Sue and the rest of the family.
Your mother was a lovely woman. I so enjoyed meeting her at The Friendly Home, and seeing the loving dedication of her daughters. My condolences to you all,
Meg Warren…Edie Murphy’s daughter (a fellow resident at The Friendly Home)
Thank you for your kind words. My best to Edie and your family.
Jean was truly a kind thoughtful Christian Southern Lady … for years like MANY Don and I were blessed to be on the receiving end of her special cards. She will be missed by those who were fortunate to have known her.
Nancy, Sue, Betsy and family please accept our Sincere Deepest Sympathy

Jean(and Jack ) were great across the street neighbors from the Stutzmans . She traded recipes with my Mom . My wife and I had a great visit with her and Sue two years ago :Sue even gave us a short tour of #14. An era of Galusha St is over. Rest in peace.
I am so very sorry to see the Lord decided to take home another wonderful angel. Yes- Jean was the true epitome of a loving, kind, sweet soul here on earth, I knew Jean for many years at Monroe Golf Club. She was such a joy to see playing cards and learning mahjong later on in years. Her southern accent was reminiscent of a time gone by- where courtesy and manners were so important. She was a truly lovely woman. My sincerest condolences to her family. Even losing her at 100, you all wish you had her for another 100 years. God Bless.Ellie LeChase
As a past secretary at First Congregational Church for 20 years, I remember your Mom and Dad as a great couple and then later you Mom as an amazing lady who aged beautifully. She was one of the nicest ladies I ever met. In the last few years we enjoyed phone visits comparing notes as “puzzlers”. I will miss her. Joyce Cowden
Jean was the epitome of the southern lady. Her accent reminded me of the years I spent living in Virginia. She was ever so gracious. I marveled at her having learned to play mahjong in her later years. I just love that photo of her!
Jean spread seeds of joy to whomever she met. She was smart, warm, and sincere, and her subtle sense of humor was a gift to the world and to her girls, who were always at her side. Quite a legacy!
Derby Day 1983 was the very first tournament dinner my wife, Susie, and I attended as Monroe Golf Club’s Golf Professional. We were fortunate to sit with Mr. and Mrs. Lauder. that night. Mrs. Lauder could not have been nicer or more welcoming. We became immediate friends. She was a beautifully sweet lady.
We lived behind the Lauders at 12 Clifford Street for many years. Jean and Jack were good neighbors and lovely people.
Jean and Jack Lauder and their daughters were dear friends of my folks and fixtures in my childhood. I remember her as a refined and compassionate lady.
Jean was a verykind, gracious, and capable woman. She spent many hours with her three girls and many friends. After Jack,s death she really focused on how to help her family. She was humble and unassuming, but very alert. We had many enjoyable moments discussing the good old times.
What a terrific gentle person My thoughts and. prayers are with
Nancy, Betsy, and Sue
