Alice S. Lucey, 87, of Fairport, passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, Sept. 22 with her husband of 67 years, Ramon, by her side.
Born February 1, 1933 to Robert and Josephine Sample in Schaghticoke, NY, Alice graduated from the Samaritan School of Nursing in 1952, and was a Registered Nurse for many years. She retired as a supervising nurse in 1998 from the Genesee Hospital, where she mentored many nurses through the hospital education program, and where she won the Pearl Stout Employee of the Year Award.
Alice enjoyed spending her summers with her family at their cottage on Canandaigua Lake which became the summertime focus for her entire family. She enjoyed celebrating holidays with family, and looked forward to these visits. She spent countless hours cooking incredible meals, growing flowers in her garden, and sharing sunsets, board games and campfires with her family. She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, knitting, and puttering around the kitchen.
Alice, along with Ray, spent her life dedicated to her children and their extended families. She would make people feel special by preparing their favorite dish. Her recipes, including turkey dinners, lasagna, brownies, grandma’s Oreos, and one-chip-chocolate-chip cookies have become cherished traditions. Family and friends sought her out for her common-sense advice and wisdom, sometimes delivered with sass and stubbornness.
Alice was a devout Catholic, attending Mass her entire life, even watching Mass every morning on TV after she was unable to attend in person. While employed at Genesee Hospital, she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She went to bed every night with her rosary in her hand.
Alice loved watching sports on TV with Ray, especially teams from Syracuse University, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, and seeing her grandchildren play youth hockey.
She loved giving Christmas presents, dancing with Ray, watching judge shows, game shows, and mysteries, doing the Jumble, and chasing lost pets in the woods.
Alice is survived by her husband Ramon, children Joanne Hein (Paul), Mary Rose Bryce (Don), Ramon Jr. (Lindsay Harris), Thomas (Susie), and Daniel (Lorraine), grandchildren Kelly Lucas (James), Colleen, Annie, Chris, Jonah, Charlie, Tyler, and Elliot, great grandchildren Noelle, Henry, and Emmy, sisters Nancy and Ruth, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Kathleen (Tom Tapen), grandson Michael, and sisters Mary and Helen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be intimately celebrated at St. John of Rochester Catholic Church, 8 Wickford Way, Fairport, NY 14450 on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 10 am. Family will be present after Mass at 11 am to receive condolences.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alice’s name to the charity of your choice.

My deepest sympathy, Ray. This is a voice out of your past.
Enjoyed all the years at TGH with Alice; she was in Nursing Ed. , then when I started in Nursing Office, she filled in often as Supervisor, so we always had fun, even on stressful days. Especially, remember the blizzard in the early 90s, We were there for 2 days without leaving; husband had brought me in, so when we wete able to go home, and we both lived in Fairport, she brought me home–was eerie, very few cars on road, and big semis overturned along 490. She was so kind to all. Remember when her daughter, Mary, was there as Pharmacist, too
Worked with Alice for many years at Genesee Hospital. What a great lady. Always had the answer to questions and solutions to nursing problems. So sorry for your loss.
Carlson 5 was supported and enhanced by her smile and wisdom. Anyone who knew her was blessed. Rest in peace dear one.
Those Canandaigua sunflowers were phenomenal! Ray and Alice where kind enough to let me stay in their home for part of one summer long ago. I remember the sunset scrabble competitions and cakes on the counter. Most of all I remember what good parents they where in the support they shared for all their children. She will be missed.
