Pastor James (Jim) Mates went home to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully, Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the age of 81. Jim was born in Granville, New York and spent part of his younger years in Montana. After graduating high school, Jim proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Jim was an accomplished musician having graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, with a bachelor’s degree in Music Theory. Jim traveled the world during his musical career playing with well-known “big bands.” Eventually, Jim met the love of his life Patricia (Patty) and settled down in Pittsford, New York, where they married on July 20, 1968.
Jim had a remarkable career with Xerox in Rochester, New York, being one of the pioneers in data programming and at one time was known as “the voice of Xerox”.
Post retirement, Jim studied theology and Greek studies and was ordained as a Pastor in March 2014. Jim served at Harvest Bible Fellowship Church in Henrietta, New York. Jim dedicated his life in service to Jesus Christ as he preached countless sermons and helped many people through difficult circumstances. Jim always made an impact on those that were around him.
Jim leaves behind his wife Patricia (Gilzow) Mates, his sisters, Barbara Goodearl and Susan Rowley, a brother Thomas Mates and his wife Amy, several nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews, and several great-great nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many that called him, Pastor, “Uncle” and friend.
Jim was predeceased by his parents Dr. Edward B. Mates and Kathleen (Doherty) Mates, and his twin brother Edward “Teddy” Mates.
Family and friends are invited to attend his celebration of life on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 10AM at Harvest Bible Fellowship Church, 1125 Calkins Road, Henrietta, New York. A springtime interment with military honors is being planned at Pittsford Cemetery.

My brother James Mates grew up in Salem, NY and Auburn, NY and Kenmore NY before moving to Montana and then the service.
