Elizabeth “Betty” Monroe was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She left this world peacefully on August 7, 2024 at age 96.
Born to Margaret and Joseph Gentle on January 20, 1928. Betty met her husband Jim Monroe in Rochester, NY while working at Fanny Farmer Candy Shop. They were married in 1947 and lived a happy life together until Jim’s passing in 1986.
Together they had 2 children: Robert and Gary. Betty leaves behind 2 children, 3 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Betty was always impeccably dressed and liked things orderly, whether she was making dinner, planting flowers or fixing her hair. She spent endless hours playing games with her children and grandchildren. To say she was competitive was the understatement of a lifetime. Although it didn’t happen often, we all took great pride in winning against her.
Growing up, the neighborhood kids would line up for one of her famous cookies — no one made a better chocolate chip cookie than Betty Monroe. Her love for drawing kept her busy in the nursing home as she spent 5+ hours a day creating beautiful artwork.
Betty’s children were committed to calling her every day. As the years went by and everyone’s hearing declined, daily chats turned into daily 5-minute shouting sessions. Nevertheless, connections were made and everyone felt the love. Betty’s quick wit, sense of humor and ability to lighten your burden will truly be missed. She was a great listener and always knew what to say.
Family, friends and others whose lives were touched by Betty are invited to Keenan Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2024. Located at 7501 Pittsford Palmyra Road in Fairport, NY. Come join us as we grieve and reminisce together.
