Thomas Lorne Penner
February 10, 1943 – February 20, 2026
Thomas Lorne Penner, 83, of Fairport, New York, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026. A man of immense intellect and even greater kindness, Tom was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. His presence was a source of steady warmth and wisdom, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Legacy of Science and Discovery
Tom’s journey began in Plum Coulee, Manitoba, Canada, where he developed the curiosity that would define his life’s work. His academic brilliance led him to the University of Manitoba, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) with honors and a Master of Science (M.Sc.). He later moved to California to attend the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he earned his PhD.
As a research chemist at the Eastman Kodak Company, Tom was regarded as a brilliant scientist and a prolific inventor. His contributions to the field of chemistry were significant, and he was responsible for numerous patents throughout his distinguished career. His colleagues remember him not only for his technical mastery but for the quiet, thoughtful way he approached the most complex challenges. He was defined by his generosity—always willing to listen, engage deeply with a problem, and offer measured, insightful advice.
A Life Rooted in Nature
Beyond the laboratory, Tom found his greatest joy in the outdoors. He was a man who moved in harmony with nature, whether he was meticulously tending to his incredible gardens or identifying a rare species while birding. He had a profound love for all animals and a deep-seated respect for the environment. His garden was a testament to his patience and care—a vibrant sanctuary that reflected his appreciation for the beauty of the world.
Family and Remembrance
Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Anne Hayes-Penner; his son, John Penner; his daughter, Eileen (Penner) Bauer; and his son-in-law, Andrew Bauer. He was a proud and loving grandfather to his two grandsons, Theodore and Francis. He also leaves behind his sisters, Dorothy Penner, Linda Penner, and Laura Penner, as well as a community of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and dear friends who viewed him as a cornerstone of their lives.

I remember meeting Tom at Eileen and Andrew’s wedding. Such a kind soul with a warm presence and smile. It was not surprising to learn of all of his accomplishments.
It seems He loved nature and showed his kids and grandchildren the beauty of being in it. What a gift and legacy.
