David passed away suddenly at the early age of sixty-one on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026.  David was predeceased by his father, Eugene Powell, and survived by his wife, Michelle L. Powell, mother, Ruth Jean Powell, brother, Wayne E. Powell, and sister, Paula A. Powell (Linda J. Malkowski).  David was born in Anniston, Alabama on August 16th, 1964.  As part of a civil service family, we traveled extensively throughout Europe, and David’s favorite place to live was Patrick Henry Village inHeidelberg, Germany. His love of horses began when we lived outside of the military base for the first year in Waldorf, Germany, on a farm with a corral behind our house and watched as the horses were trained.  David and his brother were often heard speaking the German language with new-found friends.  His love of horses continued throughout his life when he worked at the Finger Lakes Racetrack.  Several horses he worked with won races, and he proudly showed off his certificates.  After the sudden death of his dad in 1975, the family moved back to the states for support from family and friends.

David graduated from Fairport High School and was interestedin Mortuary Science and attended, alongside his mother, classes at the University of the District of Columbia, in Washington, D.C.   In this endeavor, he worked at Everly Funeral Home in Fairfax, Virginia, and had a passion to assist families in the death of their loved ones.

David and Michelle L. Mattei were married on September 11, 2007.  While living in Fairport, New York, David attended the Professional Truck Driving Institute in Liverpool, New York, and completed the 602-hour certified course for professional truck drivers, obtaining his Commercial Driver’s License.

David faced struggles throughout his life, but his heart was full of love. He was generous and gave to others selflessly. His faith in God was strong, and he was deeply grounded in God’s Word. We will miss you, David, and carry you in our hearts forever.

Friends may join the family on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. for a graveside service at White Haven Memorial Park.
