Samuel F. Prato passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side on May 6, 2020. A proud first-generation Italian American he was born December 12th 1930 to Angelina Josephine (Constanzo) and Gaetano Prato. Growing up on Portage Street he was a D&C newspaper carrier and the mascot of a semi professional football team. He graduated from Aquinas Institute in 1948 and received his AB in Philosophy and English from the University of Michigan in 1952. After receiving his law degree from Cornell University in 1955 he began his career at the Corporation Counsel’s office for the city of Rochester. He proudly served in the 124th AOB and was stationed in Germany from 1955-1957. Sam will be remembered as a lifelong Michigan football, Yankees baseball and Buffalo Bills fan. However, on occasion he did make an exception for his son in law. When he attended the super bowl, he was a Chicago Bears fan and was a Wisconsin fan at the Rose Bowl. He enjoyed spending time on the golf course and was delighted to have played Pebble Beach on one of his many visits to the Bay Area. Above all, Sam treasured his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lee (Colangelo), his sister Joan Presicci (Gene) and two children, Tom (Stephanie) and Mary (Mark) Abrams and his four grandchildren whom he adored: Victoria, Geoffrey, Alex and Sam. We are incredibly grateful to Lifetime Hospice and all of his amazing caregivers who were by his side over the past two years. Thank you; Lisa, Amanda, Maria and Vee-you gave him much needed comfort and we are eternally grateful to all of you.
Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Sam’s memory to the puppy raisers at Guiding Eyes for the Blindhttps://www.guidingeyes.org/ or Lifetime Hospice of Rochesterhttps://www.lifetimecare.org/.
