Born in Mineral Wells, Texas, son of Ed Love Rice and Easly Hill, on April 23,1935, Jim passed away suddenly in his home on Monday July7, 2025. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Patricia Della Rocco Rice, his son, James Rice Jr. of Rochester, NY and his daughter, Stephanie Maria Rice of Macedon, NY. One of three children, Jim, was predeceased by his two sisters, Ruby Kelly of Texas and Catherine Rice, also of Texas. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews in the Texas area.
After graduating from Cross Plains High school in Cross Plains Texas, Jim joined the Army and was a tuba player in the 328th US Army Band. He met Pat at the Cardinal Spellman’s Servicemen’s Club in New York City, where he asked her to dance. They went out for coffee afterwards and a wonderful romance ensued. They were married at Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Brooklyn on May 6, 1961.
Jim started his career in the photo department of City Bank in NY City and then joined Eastman Kodak in the credit department, moving to New Jersey when Kodak closed the NY office. When Kodak closed their New Jersey facilities, Jim, Pat and family moved to Rochester in 1984 where Jim worked until his first retirement at age 62. Not content with retiring, Jim was employed as a bus driver for Assumption School and then moved on to drive for the Fairport Central school district for 9 years. At 72, he joined the Pittsford Recreation Center as a driver for seniors for the center and was the main caller for Bingo.
In addition to his work, Jim believed in giving back to his community. While in New Jersey, he first became part of the Lions Club. It was the perfect fit for his wonderful energy and positive caring nature. He served in various capacities including President and Secretary there. When they moved to Fairport, Pat joined him as a member of Lions. Jim expanded his commitment with the Lions Club and has served as President, Treasurer, Secretary, District Zone Chair and District Governor. Pat and Jim both have remained active in the Fairport club. Together they have attended numerous International and state conventions representing the Fairport Club. He has been the recipient of many well deserved Lion awards including the prestigious Melvin Jones award.
Jim was a deeply spiritual man with a deep faith in God. He treated all people with consideration and caring and enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed.
Calling Hours will be held at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home (Egypt Location) 7501 Pittsford Palmyra Road Fairport, NY on Friday July 25th from 4- 6 PM.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent in Jim’s honor to the Fairport Lions Club PO Box 0276 Fairport NY 14450.

Having known Jim for decades in both the Fairport Baptist. Church and the Fairport Lions Club I can attest to the fact that he was a caring and giving man. He was the embodiment of the Lions slogan “we serve”. I will miss Jim and send prayers to Pat and family
We will miss Uncle Jim dearly. He always loved seeing his nieces and nephews in Texas and there were plenty of us to see. I know he is resting in peace with Mom and Aunt Cat. We love you Aunt Pat.

We have known Jim and Pat for more than 40 years, and enjoyed many Lions Club events with them. Being the District Governor, Jim and Pat would often be introduced as being in the audience–everyone knew them and started clapping. Maurie and MJ Wallace.

Jim’s life was a tribute to his care for others. He will be missed.
I was deeply saddened to hear about Jim’s passing. We played tuba together in the Webster Village Band for several years and developed a wonderful friendship during those years. He will be missed!!
I so enjoyed sharing our enjoyment of music while playing in the Webster Village Band for many years with him. He will be deeply missed by the band and all those that knew him. Prayers to Pat and family.
