Ed is a Saint. I always teach my kids to strive to be good citizens, a contributor to society and leave a positive impact. Ed set a bar so high that it makes it hard for others to follow. His selflessness, coaching, volunteer work, Robotics and interactions with everyone he touches, the ripple affect is immense. My friend will be greatly missed.

What a shock and loss. I knew Ed in a limited capacity at work yet he always managed to reach out and say hello in a very meaningful way. Just recently he spent the time on a Sunday at Delphi while I was giving my father a tour to talk to him about our facility and history. I have met very few people in my life as gracious and giving as Ed was. I hold his memory very close to my heart and aspire to do even a portion of his outreach to the community in his honor.

We feel devastated and heartbroken to hear of Ed’s passing. We knew him from Worldwide Marriage Encounter and Family Camp, and he and Leo became close friends. We feel so privileged to have known him and been called to work in the Lord’s vineyard with him and Leo, and saw how deeply he cared for and loved his bride, Leo, and his boys Sean and Jordan. Ed was perhaps the kindest, gentlest, most humble and loving person we’ve known. St. Paul writes to the Corinthians (1 Cor 13:4-8a): “Love is patient, love is kind. love is not jealous, not pompous, not inflated, not rude. Love does not seek its own interests, is not quick-tempered, does not brood over injury, does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” You can replace the word “love” each time with “Ed Rivera” and it makes perfect sense. We will miss you, Ed. We will be there for you and the boys, Leo.

Ed is my compass always pointing to remember my sacrament of marriage and how to feed it, to keep it healthy and true. Ed always told me to love, even when I didn’t feel loved. Ed taught me that anger is of the dark one and to only show love no matter how hard it is. And when I fail ask for forgiveness from my heart. My heart weeps several times a day thinking that this great healer is no longer with us and all the people that could, would and should be touched by Ed will have to wait. I pray for strength and healing for Leo, Jordan and Sean. We love you and thank you for having the time we had with your wonderful loving Ed.

Though it’s been many years since I worked with Ed at AC Rochester or Delphi, I will always remember him for his passion and enthusiasm for whatever he was working on. One memory that will persist for me was when he wrote a purchase request for a GM internal “tool box with wheels” where the part number was actually a Pontiac Firebird filled with tools. The memorable part was that it was approved and Ed had to scramble to get that request cancelled. Ed worked very hard and was able to find the fun when possible.

Ed was a great person to work with for the qualities that so many of us admire–good humor, kindness, intelligence, insight, and generosity. He was also determined–problems were meant to be solved in the best way for the team. Last year we faced an issue where the responsible North American executive refused to act for basically arbitrary reasons that were not in Delphi’s interest. The executive told Ed that if Ed wanted to address the issue, Ed would have to go directly to two of the C-suite executives to make the case. Ed laughed when he told me saying “He thinks telling me to go to the chief executives will stop me. It’s a double-dog dare to me!” Ed took the issue to the chief executives and it was resolved to our satisfaction.
I am grateful that I had the privilege and pleasure to work with Ed for the years I did. To Leonor, Jordan, Sean, and the rest of Ed’s family, I extend my condolences.
May God bless you and keep you.

Leo was our son’s computer teacher at St John of Rochester. We never saw Ed without a smile or a positive attitude. He and Leo exemplified all anyone could hope for in a marriage and relationship. His kindness, sense of humor and humility were apparent to all. We shared many cold regattas huddled together waiting for results and passing the time telling stories and jokes. Ed was a true example of a gentle man and loving husband and father. He set a bar that most could not meet . We will always remember him fondly and pray that Leo , Sean and Jordon find comfort in knowing the positive impact Ed had on so many. When thinking of Ed and Leo it brings a smile to our face for the absolute friendship they showed towards our family. Joining the McQuiad crew parent group was made so much easier by Ed’s and Leo’s ability to befriend a new family to the school. Ed was always there to answer our naive and sometimes annoying questions. Without hesitation he would answer and carry on a polite conversation, all the while educating us about the sport. Leo and Ed showed us how to be good mentors for new novice families joining crew. So we are saddened to hear this news, but our minds quickly turn to all the great memories we shared. Ed, may God take you by the hand and without hesitation answer your questions and help you look over your family. God bless you and your family.

  71. I had the privilege and pleasure of being one of Ed’s cousins. I enjoyed every moment we shared together. Summers were fun as he allowed me to join him on his paper route. He would let me keep the candies some of his customers left him. He always had a smile, joke, encouraging words and a humble personality. I loved the way he cared for all of us. I will miss my cousin, but know that the next time I see him it will be forever. We will be in constant prayer for my cousins Leo, Jordan, Sean, tio Edwin Sr, and my awesome cousins Eileen, Sandy, Millie, Caroline and Suzi.

I will remember Ed most as a friend but also as a fellow employee at Delphi. He was in our group I think at the very beginning of his engineering career. The first thought that comes to mind is his ever present smile. Then his soft spoken manner. He was a dedicated, hard working person and had a certain twinkle in his eye that let you know he also had a great sense of humor. Anne and I were honored to be invited to Ed and Leonor’s wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony and so very special because it was conducted in two languages. There was also a “Blessing of Their House” which Anne still talks about. Our sincere condolences to Ed’s family. I’m sure he has touched many people who have been made richer by knowing him.

I was able to learn and grow very much from his example of wise, capable, and friendly leadership through our interactions in FIRST Robotics. From that point on, he was always my mental image of a “professional engineer” and the person to whom I reached out for guidance on multiple occasions while beginning my studies in engineering. Leo, Jordon and Sean, Words cannot describe how sorry I am for your loss. No better person than Ed has ever walked this earth. He was a person who always gave to others with no expectation of reciprocation. The list of Ed’s attributes are too long to be included here. Ed always had a contagious smile on his face and lifted the spirits of those he was around. I had the honor to work with Ed as a co-worker, a boss, and friend. When we solved a problem at work – he had his Staples –“That was easy” button he hit and we all would chuckle. I think he wore it out as it did eventually disappear. This certainly is not easy. They brought the Lord’s peace wherever they went. Ed exemplifies God’s command to be his hands on this earth. They even provided peace-of-mind room and board for our college-aged daughter when we had to pack up and move out of state. Dear Leo, Jordan, and Sean: out heartfelt condolences to you and your extended family. While I did not have the privilege of working with Ed to solve difficult engineering problems, I did find it remarkable that Ed could even make working on budgets and forecasts (in an era when budgets were constantly being squeezed) a pleasant experience. His calm approach to solving those problems left a lasting impression on me. Ed and I shared an interest in photography and once, while re-configuring his equipment, he found that he had a surplus bag and asked me if I had a use for it. I appreciated that gesture then and will always treasure that bag. His generous sharing of his expertise and knowledge of robotics was a beneficial starting point for the Rochester Academy Charter School robotics program.

Ed has left a remarkable legacy across every field that he worked in. His example will forever inspire us all.

My very first friend at Cornell, you took the time to introduce me to others those first few days. You taught me to play pool, and as horrible as I was, you laughed with me, not at me. I teased you mercilessly about being from Buffalo, but you took it in stride. For the next four years you were always there when I needed someone to talk to,and oh, the laughs we had. Then you connected with my old high school friend Leonor, and found your forever love and i was happy for you. Coincidentally, when I married, we ended up living in Rochester for several years, allowing us to continue our friendship. Though the years since have separated us, you were always one of my favorite memories of Cornell. Reconnecting with you on social media was a blessing. For all of his accomplishments and all of the time he gave to improving the life of his communities, he rarely asked for anything in return.
