On July 3rd, 2025 Joseph E. Schnupp Sr.  passed away at 91 years old, with loving family by his side.  He was loved by many and known for his commitment to family, church, career and community.

Joe was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Helene; his sister Martha Alexander(Alvis), as well as his parents Joseph and Martha. He is survived by his children: Joseph Jr.(fiancé Barb Briley), Eileen(David Sestito), Patricia, John(Joy), Michael(Kathy), William(Kelly), Kathleen(Roman Synowski).  Beloved grandchildren: Joseph III (Taylor), Jesse(Chelsea), Jared, Jakob(Dana), Michele, David, Gabrielle(Jerry Higgins), Daniel, Halie, Carlie, Mickyla, Kris, Alex, Madeline, Charlotte, Danielle(fiancé Luis Vazquez), and Kaitlin. His cherished great grandchildren: Connor, Chandler, Jaelyn, Kaelee, Alivia, Violet, Victor, Jayden, Javier and Jahkari. He was also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Joe was born in Philadelphia and served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant until Honorable Discharge in 1960, where he continued in Navy Reserves until 1972.   While in the Navy, he met the love of his life Helene and was married in 1958.  In 1964, Joe was hired for a Finance position at Xerox and moved to Fairport, New York.  While working at Xerox, Joe and his wife Helene raised their 7 children, many who were involved in school and sports activities.  He was very involved with the church and often volunteered to help with church activities: Habitat for Humanity, Perinton Churches Housing(President), G2(inner city tutoring), and active in Indian Guides, Knights of Columbus, and list goes on. After retiring from Xerox, he worked at Barnes and Noble part time to continue staying busy. His love of reading led him to give gifts and read books to all the grandchildren.

Joe was heavily family oriented.   There were many trips to Philadelphia to visit family, for weddings and many other events.  The five-hour trip could be a bit stressful with 7 children packed in a station wagon, but they made it work!  There were also vacations to Wildwood, New Jersey where everyone could enjoy the ocean, boardwalk and family dinners together.  Then there were the short notice Sunday drives where everyone piled in the station wagon and drove with no particular destination in mind.   All these simple trips and activities didn’t seem that important at the time but turned out to be some of the fondest memories!

There were many family get-togethers on Sundays, Holidays and birthdays at Joe and Helene’s house.  The large expanding family would all pack in and enjoy some great home cooking, a wide range of conversations and many laughs along the way.  Being from Philadelphia, Joe was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies teams.  During get-togethers, you would often hear some yelling and screaming coming from the family room and know right away if it was a score or defeat!  Joe was happy to see the Eagles win two Super Bowls and the Phillies win two World Series.

Joe was a committed jogger and helped coach baseball for his children’s teams, not to mention attending many of their sporting, scouting and school events.  Joe stayed committed to Fairport Little League in various Director positions (Umpires, Leagues and Teams) well after his children were no longer participating. Many people in the community knew him and the thoughts were always the same, that Joe was a really good man and standup guy that deeply cared about his faith and family and doing the right thing, even if it inconvenienced himself.   We will all miss Joe Schnupp, but we know he is with his wife Helene, as well as other loved ones, and the Lord was waiting with open arms.

The family kindly requests in lieu of flowers that you would consider giving to one of his favorite charities in his memory:  Covenant House (CovenantHouse.org), Catholic Relief Services (CRS.org), Unbound (Unbound.org), or Anthony Poselovich Foundation (anthonyposelovichfoundation.org)

  1. Farewell Joe,
I thoroughly enjoyed all our chats at Resurrection’s daily morning coffee hour after 8:30AM mass. The tales of your Rochester winter work commutes to Xerox were intriguing.
And I doubt there are many Philly college & pro sports more knowledgeable than you. Go LaSalle, Eagles, Sixers.
I admired you for your faith, friendliness, and quick wit. God Bless!
    We’ll miss ya. Tony

  2. Eileen,
It breaks my heart to think that a friend has lost a parent. Please know that you have my heartfelt sympathy and that you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Treasure your memories together and the fact that he was here to enjoy watching your family grow. That, in itself, is the greatest gift. I love you.

  3. I had the pleasure or organizing a few Fairport Little League banquets with Joe. I had no idea he had such a large family. I am sure all of you will comfort each other at this difficult time for your family.

  5. To the Joseph E Schnupp Family,
I too had the pleasure of knowing Joe through our family’s uniting in marriage in 1999 when my son Roman took the hand of Kathleen.
Shortly there after Joe and I gathered our wits as we took on the reception resturant in a court of law. Joe’s Finacial background guided us through the accounting of our case. During the trial the judge recognized us for a well structured brief, which he stated he wouldn’t have known what to do without it. So anyway, that was the beginning of great relationship over the last 29 years. Rest in Peace Joseph, we’ll miss you!!

  6. I did many years of G2[Generation two] with Joe playing with our young friends k-2. Also, many, many social ministry meeting at Church. He Was devoted and a wonderful friend. I actually introduced him to a wonderful restaurant that he did not know about.

  7. Joe served 20 years as a director of Perinton Churches Housing, Inc., three years as president, plus several years as a director of the Fairport/Perinton Senior Living Council, Inc. He was devoted to serving seniors in need of safe, affordable housing, transportation, and supportive services. He spent many hours quietly working behind the scenes to fulfill the mission. His integrity, good humor, and dedication were an inspiration to all. Many seniors today are living better lives because of Joe’s good work. It was a privilege to know him during this period and keep in touch after he retired.

  8. Mr. Schnupp was such a nice, fun man whom I met when I was newly born. He always greeted me and my family with a hug and a warm smile. He truly listened and had a great sense of humor. I remember seeing him jog in Fairport and volunteering at his Grandchildren’s school events. My parents were best friends with Mr. and Mrs. Schnupp. The stories of our family get togethers will always be remembered. Thank you, Mr. Schnupp, for caring so much for others. You will be missed. Have fun with my Dad in heaven. Love, Lynn Cruickshank Tabone

  10. I had the pleasure of sitting in front of Joe at church for years with both of us singing out strongly. I felt as though we were singing together. A lovely and kind man I’m glad to have known.

  11. Joe and I are 2 members of the “Perinton 8” who started The Church of The Resurrection doing painting and anything else under Fr. Kroeckel’s directions. Many good, happy memories are still on my mind over 50+ years later. God bless your soul Joe, rest peacefully.

  12. I worked with Joe for a number of years at Xerox. He always spoke so lovingly and proudly of his seven children. When I was pregnant for my first child, Joe gifted me with a set of cocktail glasses and assured me they would come in handy. He was just a wonderful human being. I am glad his family had 91 years with him! Surely he will be greatly missed.

  13. I was saddened to hear of Mr. Joseph Schnupp’s passing. Though I knew him only briefly in my youth, I remember him as a strong and devoted father to his seven children. His quiet strength and commitment to family left a lasting impression.
