Thurley, Phillip Ivor

Fairport, New York:  Phillip Ivor Thurley, 82, passed away peacefully with this family by his bedside on Thursday, March 10, 2022, after fighting a two-month battle with a heart infection.  Phil was a devoted and loving Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle and the type of Friend that anyone would want to have.

Phil is survived by his wife Marge of 56 years of Fairport, his two sons, Tim (Adrian) Thurley of Fairport, Mike (Deb) Thurley of Sodus Point, his sister Janet Hilyer of Clifton Springs, his sister-in-law Evie Porter of Geneva, his granddaughters Megan Thurley, of Fairport who currently is attending college at Virginia Tech and Morgan Thurley of Fairport, along with several nieces and nephews.

Phil was pre-deceased by his parents, Dallas and Phyllis Thurley, his brother and sister-in-law, David (Beverly) Thurley, his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara (Thomas) Bryan, his brother-in-law Jack Hilyer and his mother-in-law and father-in law John and Leona Choffin.

Phil was born in Irondequoit NY on October 4, 1939, and for most of his early childhood lived (and worked) on a farm. Phil graduated from Geneva High School in 1960, enlisted in the United States Navy and served four years on the USS DuPont, which included a tour in the Mediterranean Sea during the Cuban Crisis and Vietnam War.

Phil married Marge on May 15, 1965, and while building a family of his own, attended Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).  After a successful career as a Process Engineer, Phil retired from Bausch & Lomb at age 54.

Phil was an active member of St. John of Rochester, Perinton Memorial VFW Post 8495, participant of the Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 1229.

Phil was also a volunteer and former President and Chairman of the Board of the Genesee Valley Automotive Club.  Phil’s passion was to tour with his 1961 Corvette and 1991 Ford Mustang with Marge.   Phil and Marge also spent 18+ winters in Southwest FL with their friends as well.

When asked, Phil was most proud of the legacy that he was leaving behind.  His favorite moments were spending time at the family cottage on Seneca Lake, being present and active in his sons’ and granddaughters’ lives giving support to all they did that included renovation projects, attending sporting events such as baseball, soccer, and basketball games, sailing regattas, cheerleading competitions, school events and just being together as a family.  These memories with Phil will live in our hearts forever.

Friends and family are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Friday, April 1, 2022 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home (Egypt Location) 7501 Pittsford Palmyra Road, Fairport.

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John of Rochester, 8 Wickford Way, Fairport.

The family will be having a private burial during the Summer of 2022 to place Phil’s ashes at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery that overlooks Seneca Lake so that he will be able to continue to enjoy watching over his family on the lake.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Phil’s memory to the VFW Perinton Memorial Post 8495 – Fairport or to the American Legion Post #1229.
