Mary Lou Wakefield passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Fairport Baptist Homes at the age of 90. We are deeply grateful for the staff at Fairport Baptist Homes who took excellent care of Mary Lou and were a comfort to her family.

Mary Lou is predeceased by her parents Merle R. Snyder and Elvira Faull Snyder, sister Carolyn (Kay) Kuechle, and cherished aunt, Helen Everson.

She is survived by her sons Brian Wakefield and Keith Wakefield (Kim) and daughters Tracy Cross (Paul) and Shelly Wakefield. She is also survived by her grandchildren Muriel Cross, Ian Cross, and Avery Cross, and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Butler Pennsylvania in 1931, Mary Lou moved to Buffalo, NY after high school to pursue higher education. She was a 1953 graduate of the Edward J. Meyer Memorial School of Nursing and was very proud of her degree and her accomplishments as a registered nurse.

Mary Lou took joy in being a homemaker and mother.  She was devoted to her family and was the glue that kept everyone connected. She was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Mary Lou’s passion for animals was boundless and she passed her love and respect for animals on to her children and grandchildren.

Her children will hold a celebration of life at a later date. Those wishing to remember Mary Lou are encouraged to raise a toast in honor of her life. Memorials in her name may be made to Lollypop Farm, Human Society of Greater Rochester.

She will be missed.

I want to send my condolences to Mary Lou’s family……especially to Tracy and Shelly who I have met. I sat next to Mary Lou at dinner every night when she lived at the Legacy at Clover-Blossom for several years. She was an extremely courageous woman who endured many physical problems and the pain related to them. However, she never complained. Our dinner table was a congenial place to be and we had many good conversations. With the COVID pandemic raging, I had not seen her in over a year and a half and I really missed not seeing her or talking to her. I know her family took very good care of her and I hope they are relieved to know that now she is out of pain and at peace. God bless all of you as you go through the grieving process.

Dear Shelly, Tracy, Keith, Brian. So sorry to hear about your dear Mom. I have fond memories of many happy days when we all lived on Fairlane. She was always the neighbor we looked up to, knew how to accomplish so much while raising her busy family. Here so briefly and missed so much. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
