George B. Wyman of Fairport, NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 27, 2025. George was born on June 11, 1941 in Penn Yan, NY, to the late Mildred and Alton Wyman. He graduated from Middlesex Valley Central School in 1958 and attended State University of New York at Buffalo on basketball scholarship where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree of Education in Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1963. He later returned to Buffalo to earn his Master’s Degree in Education after proudly serving in Vietnam, where he was awarded several medals including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.
George taught Physical Education at Fairport High School from 1973-2001 where he also found great joy sharing his passion for basketball as a coach and mentor to many students. He arranged and participated in intramural basketball throughout his tenure at Fairport where he made lifelong friendships. He continued to play basketball into his 80’s. He shared his love of sports and competition with his family and throughout his retirement he enjoyed traveling to watch his grandchildren compete in college sports. If he wasn’t watching his grandchildren, he was always supporting Yankee baseball and Syracuse basketball teams.
George is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jo Ann, and his daughters Paige (Michael) and Stacey (Reginald) and his six grandchildren: Peyton, Kiley, Janelle, Jalen, Jarod and Jada. He is also survived by his beloved sister Wanda Polisseni and his niece Val Wilcox, and many life long friends.
Mass will be held on Friday, June 27th at 11:00 am at Church of the Assumption, 20 East Avenue, Fairport, followed by a Celebration of Life at Assumption. The George B. Wyman Memorial Scholarship Fund is being established to provide a scholarship to a Fairport High School student who shares a passion for basketball. Details will be shared in the near future.

Most of the guys that went to Gorham and later Marcus Whitman had Mr. Wyman for a coach in basketball and baseball. He certainly taught us dedication and commitment! Condolences to the family! RIP Mr. Wyman 🏀🏀🙏
JoAnn and family, we just returned home and learned of George’s passing. We have many wonderful memories of this kind and caring man. We send our sympathy and our prayers.

Coach Wyman, you will be in my finest memories.
You started teaching me basketball (and life skills) in my grade school years (Gorham & Marcus Whitman) and even attended to watch me play at St. John Fisher University.
Then the great pickup games of our adulthood, but I could never play as long as you did.
God Bless Coach and your family.
Sympathies and prayers to the family. I was a student of Coach Wyman. Class of 84
