This is the life story of Lloyd Frederick Berardi who passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 27th, at age 82.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of sixty years, Patricia Quataert Berardi, sister Ellen Berardi Regan, son Timothy Berardi, granddaughter Olivia Berardi, grandson Alex Berardi, and daughter Sue (Michael) Zak.  Lloyd was pre-deceased by his parents Lloyd H. Berardi and Harriett Lang Berardi.

Lloyd was born on November 1st, 1937 – All Saints Day, as he loved to point out.  He was the 86th baby to be christened in a cherished family heirloom – a handmade Irish lace and linen gown crafted 125 years prior that was passed down through the generations from mother to daughter, ending up with Lloyd’s mother, Harriett.

He grew up in Rochester’s 19th ward and attended St. Monica for grammar school and Aquinas Institute for high school.  The 19th ward was also where he met childhood and lifelong friends John Regan, Bill Kelly, Dick Powers, Joe Sanfilippo, and Joe Sinacori.  While in high school, Lloyd took a job bagging groceries at Loblaw’s.  A pretty young cashier, Pat Quataert, soon caught his eye.  Shortly after introducing himself, Lloyd told her and the customers in her line that this was the girl he was going to marry.  True to his word, they were wed in 1960.  From the time they began dating, he developed special relationships with each of the Quataert siblings – Don, Phyllis, Pam, Mike, Pete, Bob, and Helen.  For many years, Pat and Lloyd’s home was the site of family gatherings, parties, and celebrations.

Following in his father’s (“Big Lloyd”) footsteps, he enjoyed playing all kinds of sports, including baseball, softball, and basketball.  This list grew to include golf, bowling, and all manner of backyard games such as bocce, volleyball, and lawn darts.  He spent many years coaching the St. Thomas Moore basketball team in the Rochester CYO League.  Lloyd was an avid sports fan as well, attending football and baseball games, as well as tennis matches to support his own children and later his beloved grandchildren (adding volleyball, basketball, and swimming to his viewing repertoire).  He and son Tim shared a love of Syracuse basketball.

For nearly fifty-seven years, Lloyd was an active member and organizer of the Xerox Golf Association.  Tuesday nights and Saturday afternoons were often spent with his golfing buddies, including John Clapp, Andy Trabold, Earl Doser, Pete Chastek, John Beasman, Dave Pierson, and Mike Bacci.  He also loved golfing with family, and the golf outing vacations with brothers-in-law Michael and Donald Quataert were a source of many laughs, love, and out-of-bounds shots.  In addition, Lloyd was an avid bowler for many years at Panorama Bowl as a member of the “Sick Six.”

Lloyd received a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Detroit.  His first job after college was working for Birdseye Research in Albion.  He subsequently joined Xerox in 1962.  While working full time and raising a young family, Lloyd earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Rochester’s Simon School.

During his thirty-three years at Xerox, Lloyd worked in a variety of engineering and management roles including materials management, quality assurance, supply chain management, packaging engineering, and cost engineering.  Those who worked for or with Lloyd commented on the fact that he was an exceptionally caring and compassionate manager and colleague.  Upon his retirement from Xerox in 1995, Lloyd became an active member of the Xerox Retiree Association.

Lloyd and Pat raised their children in Fairport and later moved to Penfield where Lloyd quickly found himself serving as the de facto “mayor” of the neighborhood.  Residents tell how Lloyd was the first person they met when they moved in and how warm, friendly, and inviting he was.  He was President of the homeowner’s association for many years, helped publish the HOA newsletter, and served as unofficial “ambassador” to welcome new residents.

Family was the most important aspect of Lloyd’s life.  He took great pride and pleasure in anything and everything his children Tim and Sue, son-in-law Michael, and grandchildren Olivia and Alex accomplished – be it academic, athletic, or artistic.  He was also extremely proud and supportive of Pat and her quilting accomplishments.  She was always the center of his life – his beloved bride, partner, and best friend.

A funeral mass will be livestreamed on the St.John of Rochester website this coming Friday at 11:00 am at  www.stjohnfairport.org

For those who are interested in making a donation in Lloyd’s name, we would encourage you to consider the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.  Lloyd worked on at least one Habitat home, and spoke glowingly of the experience.  For more information, check out their website at www.rochesterhabitat.org/donate.html

I was so sorry to hear about Lloyd’s passing. I worked with him many years in Manufacturing at Xerox. He was one of those people you never forget. I hope the following words will comfort you as they did me when my father passed away.

Today we say goodbye to a loved one. Someone who filled our lives with joy and meaning, laughter and tears. Someone who touched our souls and moved our hearts. We thank him for the time he shared with us on earth and now sadly send his spirit to the heavens. When you look at the stars, remember him — he will be the brightest star in the evening sky.

My condolences to Pat & the Berardi family. I remember Lloyd as a happy, fun-loving guy who worked at Xerox with my late husband, Dick Palermo. . There were the monthly card games, many Xerox get togethers where Lloyd was always an active participant & all around “nice guy.” May he rest in peace

Lloyd was a longtime member of our HOA Board and for most of those years served as president. He was a genuine, warm, friendly, caring person and these personal qualities were magnified in his board and community leadership. Lloyd made sure he knew everyone and always worked hard on behalf of the community. He had the complete and continuing history of Mayfair Park in his memory and always managed to look out for individual homeowners while keeping a focused eye on the “greater good.” Many of our present Board members acknowledge Lloyd as an inspiration for their own community involvement.

We are thinking of Pat and their children and grandchildren at this difficult time and assure them that we all feel that we were fortunate to have him in our midst for as long as we did and we will miss him dearly. May he rest in peace.

Our deepest condolences to Pat, Tim, Sue, and family for Lloyd’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I knew and worked with Lloyd from back in the early 70’s and then left the Rochester area for many years. With retirement in the early 2000’s we returned to Rochester and moved into our townhome directly across the street from Pat and Lloyd. Even at that time Lloyd had become the “de-facto mayor of Mayfair Park”. May you Rest In Peace Lloyd!!!

Sue, Tim, Pat and extended family – my deep sympathy for the loss of Lloyd. I had the opportunity to attend the service online. He would be so proud of the eulogy Tim crafted. He would be so proud of Sue’s heartfelt comments of Lloyd as an exemplar and role model father, and husband. I knew him through the filter of being “Sue’s Dad” and he was that excellent role model Sue described. He was a caring and responsible parent, encouraging and supportive of Sue setting and inspiring a high standard of behavior, guided by fundamental principles and kindness. May Lloyd rest well in God’s keeping. His teachings and legacy live and grow on in his children, grandchildren, friends and family. May the pain at his loss be healed and transformed with inspired actions in his honor and memory. Peace and comfort to you all.

Lloydy was a great cousin. We could always count on him to pitch to us in the back yard or toss a football in the street. Lloydy was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by all. Frankie
