Thorn, J. Richard

J. Richard Thorn, 97, at the Highlands Living Center, Pittsford, New York, passed away on 9/15/20.

Richard was born in Kingston, NY to Clarence and Gladys (Terhune) Thorn on November 19, 1922.  He graduated from Oakwood School in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Richard served his country during WW2 as an MP, seeing action in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.  Richard was a professional welder, working for decades at John Arborio Construction of Poughkeepsie, NY where he also served as Shop Steward for the International Union of Operating Engineers. After the War, he built a house on Beechwood Avenue in Poughkeepsie where he and his wife raised their family and lived there until 2010.

An avid lifelong sportsman, he was most comfortable outside hunting, hiking or fishing. He also thoroughly enjoyed his cottage at Long Lake, NY where he spent summer months enjoying fishing, visits from family, boating and the beauty of his surroundings. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) in Clintondale and later at Poughkeepsie, NY.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 73 years, H. Marie Coutant, and sons David (Jan) and John (Susan).  His youngest son, Brian (Diane), predeceased him.  Also, survived by his nephew Gary (Christine) Thorn and niece Cindy. He was beloved by his six grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
